PIKE COUNTY HAS NUMEROUS LOCATIONS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED AT OFFICIAL LINCOLN SITES. IN FACT PITTSFIELD HAS THE DISTINCTION OF HAVING MORE THAT ANY OTHER LOCATION IN THE COUNTRY.

.

The Abe Lincoln Project of Pike County, Illinois has begun to make plans for the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War to be held in 2011.

This year's Lincoln days Reenactment to be held on June 5th and 6th 2010 at Lake Pittsfield and the 2011 Event will feature highlights of Pike County's role in the Civil War.

Three cavalry companies and fifteen infantry companies were organized in Pike County in addition to the entire 99th Regiment during the War.  Men from Pike County also enlisted in a number of Missouri units.  To commemorate their service, the Abe Lincoln Project is planning to publish a book in 2011 that will include company and regiment histories, battles, and biographies of the  veterans from Pike County.  Families in Pike County that  have an ancestor who enlisted from anywhere in Illinois can also submit materials to be included in the book.  The book will serve as a permanent record of the history of the veterans of Pike County and others involved in the War.  Plans are also underwayto mark the graves of all Civil War Veterans  buried in Pike County on Memorial Day 2011, including the graves of seven known Confederate soldiers buried in Pike County.

The Abe Lincoln Project is asking members of the public to submit photos, letters, biographies, copies of muster rolls, etc. to them for publication in the book.  Materials may be sent  to The Abe Lincoln Project, P.O. Box 62, Pittsfield, Illinois  62363.  You may also call members of the Pike County Soldiers Committee:  Steve Boze  833-2747,  Jerry Grimes 285-6649, Aaron Combs 734-9267, John Sheppard 285-2320, or Kathy Zimmerman 285-6995, or Jim Sheppard 285-5224
